"Closed five years after this malt was made, Port Ellen distillery became widely known after 1836 when owner, John Ramsay, pioneered whisky exports to America, shipping single malt from the quay. The first spirit safe was introduced here in 1824, years before their general adoption, as was Scotland's first onsite duty-free bonded warehouse in 1848. Listed buildings now, Port Ellen's old warehouses live on."
