Before there was whiskey there was poitín (potsheen). The original Irish spirit, Ireland's 'Water of life', our gift to the world as one of the first, if not the first, spirits every to be distilled.
In the beginning it was made with expertise and reverence over 14 centuries ago by Irish monks.
It was then outlawed in 1661 and forced into the wilderness where it enjoyed an illicit romanticism."
