Alvi's Drift
Albertus Viljoen Limited Release
Chenin Blanc 2022
The grape clusters are hand-selected and harvested in the early morning to preserve the full freshness and flavour of the fruit. The wine presents a light, bright straw colour and sparkles in the glass like crystal.
On the nose, it reveals a complex and enticing bouquet of nectarine and peach, beautifully complemented by subtle notes of toast and oak. The palate is rich and creamy, with hints of roasted cashew nuts and vanilla pod that gently stimulate the senses. The wine delivers a soft, full, rounded and elegant mouthfeel, with a finish that seems to linger endlessly.
About Alvi’s Drift
Alvi is short for Albertus Viljoen — the official first name of the owner of the South African winery Alvi’s Drift, located in Worcester. Among friends, he is simply known as Alvi.
Today’s Alvi represents the third generation of the family. The story began in 1928 with the first Albertus Viljoen van der Merwe, a gentleman farmer in Worcester, some two hours’ drive from Cape Town. His estate, Alfalfa, lay on both sides of the Breede River, prompting him to build a drift (Afrikaans for “bridge”) in 1928 to allow easier access between the two halves. Before long, this crossing became affectionately known as Alvi’s Drift.
Today, the family honours this legacy by using the name on their wines. Since 1928, the family estate has expanded to encompass 420 hectares of vineyards. Staying true to their agricultural roots, they also farm 4,000 cattle, 200,000 chickens, and manage orchards of citrus and peach trees.
Whilst Alvi’s brother Johan oversees the farm, Alvi himself manages the vineyards. The estate now cultivates no fewer than 19 different grape varieties. Nestled in the heart of the Breede River Valley, within the Worcester district, these vineyards — under the guidance of Alvi and his passionate team of winemakers — produce wines that are now gaining well-deserved international acclaim.
